NEWSLETTER - MARCH/APRIL 2016

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

A big thank you to the Ladies Auxiliary for their gift of the purchase and installation of new handicap entrances to the downstairs washrooms. Thank You Ladies.

While I am saying thank you, I would like to acknowledge all of the work being done in the branch by the many volunteers. Without their help the branch could be in dire straits. The funds raised by the many members involved in the meat draws, Texas Hold-em, Chase The Ace, Special Basket draws and other fund raising events continue to help balance the books. Without your support of these events it would be difficult for the branch to continue operating.

At the April meeting we will be deciding on the number of delegates and electing members to be delegates to the 2016 Dominion Convention. If you are interested in representing your branch at this convention please attend the meeting in order to be elected as a delegate. The convention will be held in St Johns NFLD, 11 - 14 June, 2016.

The Sports Foundation of Manitoba & Northwest Ontario Command operates the Best Sports Camp in Canada for Children. In order to do this they need help. If you are able to give some time to the welfare of our youth, then maybe you could volunteer as a Dorm Dean (Chaperone) at the Athletic Camp for a week this summer. The camp operates in one week blocks from 17 July 2016 until 13 August 2016 at The International Peace Garden. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

My best wishes to all. If you are under the weather, Get Well Soon, and I hope to see you all in the branch over the next couple of months.

Cde. Ronn Anderson, President

LADIES AUXILIARY

Thank you to those that brought in Soup Labels. For 2015 there were 1674 Soup Labels, thank you for your support. You can still bring them in.

At the meeting on 7th of January, both Freda Granger and Joan Faraci put in the Birthday Basket. That day was Freda's Birthday. We wish you both the best.

Annette Sul had a bad fall at home, she was taken to the Grace Hospital. Joan Faraci also took a tumble at home, but she is ok.

Our President Corinne received a Certificate of Merit for 29 years of service, Congratulations.

Spoke with Marion Schroeder the other day, she also took a bad fall at home. She was in the hospital, but is home now. She has been moved to Assisted Living, it will be a change for her. She is coming along ok.

For our Election we now have out list complete.

  • Kay McKinnon - Secretary
  • Jane Deller - 2nd Vice, also Membership

They both do a good job.

Jan Miller has not been out in a while, she has been a bit under the weather. She was out to our meeting, we sure missed her on the piano.

# 141 Auxiliary has closed, so we have 2 transfers coming in to join our Auxiliary. More information later.

Just recently Debi Pointkoski lost her Father, George Pioth on January 12/16. Our Condolences to Debi and her Family.

Spoke to Annette this morning, is home now and glad to be home. She will be taking it easy for a while.

Marjorie Martin has had a very bad cold, look after yourself. Our Secretary, Kay McKinnon also has a bad cold, take care.

SPORTS

For those who don't know me, my name is Randy Morningstar and I am the new Sports Chairman/Rep, whichever you prefer, I have been a Legion member for 23 years and a member of St James Legion since 2001. I am also a serving member in the CAF, for just shy of 35 years. I look forward to my tenure as your sports rep and I am open to any suggestions or concerns you may have, and look forward to making our legion a fun place to hold and play sporting events and leagues!

Spring is right around the corner and it is almost time to dust off the golf clubs!

Cribbage

District finals were held 31 Jan 2016 at West Kildonan Branch #30, our single representatives did very well; Barry O'Donnel came in first and Linda Morley finished third. In the doubles, our team of Barry and Linda finished first. Well done to both. They will going to Roblin, MB for the Provincials March 11th-13th.

Curling

The curling has been going strong and the playoffs started 24 Jan and every Sunday after with the final being played on 3 Apr. At the end of round robin play, R. Fisette's team finished first with 15 points. The playoffs are broken down into A and B side, the top four teams are in the A group while B group has the next six teams. If you are looking to see some good playoff curling, head on down to the rink on Sundays!

Darts

The Wednesday night Dart League is still going strong, it starts at 1730 hrs (7:30) you can still come out and spare if you like, they are always looking for new players! The season is winding down, just a couple more months to go! The banquet has been scheduled for 30 Apr. The District play downs were held West Kildonan, Branch #30, and 13 Feb 2016. Our representatives gave a fine effort but came up a little short in going on to the Provincial play downs, better luck next year guys, well done though!

International Veterans Billiard League

There are 10 teams in the league and we have two teams, St James #1 and St James #2. As of 18 Feb the first place team has 50 points with St James #1 close behind with 49 points while St James #2 is tied with three other teams for fourth place. The top six teams make the playoffs, well done to all players. Also, it is a huge feat in our league to have a player run a Century(100+points), on 18 Feb, Steve Jones, of St James #2 ran a 110, well done Steve congratulations on your first Century! There is six weeks to go in the regular season before the playoffs start, good luck to both teams!

Senior Snooker League

The senior snooker league continues to go strong and if anyone wants to go watch and have a good laugh with all the players, and join in on the heckling; the games are played every Wednesday and Thursday starting at 0900 hrs!

Please watch the bulletin boards for upcoming sporting events to take place at our branch.

Yours Fraternally

WAY'S and MEANS

We had our Valentine's Day Basket Draw on February 13, 2016. The winner was Debra Forbes, who was happy with her win. I would like to thank Daurelle Wowchuk and George Morrison who donated items to the basket draw. I would like to thank Al Coote for helping me with the basket draw. We made a minimal profit for the branch given the time we had. Our next draw is the Mother's Day Basket. The Basket will be out soon and the draw date is May 7, 2016. If you know of any business or if you would like to donate to the basket, you can either leave it at the bar or see myself.

Our Chase The Ace has now commenced. The jackpot is currently at $1,757.50. It held every Monday Evening. The tickets are $5.00 for a strip of 5 tickets. We also have a 50/50 draw and the tickets are $1.00 for 5 tickets. Sales start at 6:00 PM and close at 8:00 PM. We have our 50/50 draw first and the Chase The Ace draw at 8:15 PM. Why not come down with a group of friends and have an enjoyable evening with a chance to win some cash. I would like to thank Mike Thayer, and Al Coote for their time to make this endeavor possible.

On Friday evenings along with our mini meat draw, Betty Zarney is holding a mini bake draw. She is raising money towards our 90th Anniversary and also for the Provincial Convention in 2017

Also have a look at the wall behind the bar; we are selling items for the MFRC (Military Family Resource Centre" to help the Troops and their families. Support your troops on Friday by wearing RED.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

In recent years we have lost many Comrades available for the important duty of Honorary Pallbearers who are needed to honor our fallen Veterans. I would appreciate you getting in touch with me at 889-8225 or leave your name and phone number at the Branch office. Thank you in advance for your co-operation

LAST POST

Heaven's gate swung gently open, the Master called softly "Come" and you Dear one took the Master's hand and your work on earth was done. We'll never cease to miss you and shed many silent tears because we cannot share with you Our hopes, Our joys, Our fears. But one day in God's garden when the master calls us to come, You'll be at the gates with open arms and say to us "Welcome home".

It is with deep sympathy the Branch records the passing of the following Comrades since our last review. The Officers, Executives and members extend their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
